How To Enjoy DC in the Spring: A List of the Best Outdoor Activities

There’s no denying that Spring in the Washington DC area is one of the best times of the year to enjoy the outdoors. DC Craft Beer Festival

When: April 20, 2019

Session 1: 12-3 p.m. Session 2: 5-8 p.m.

Where: Nationals Park

Around 80 craft breweries from across the country, including local breweries in DC, MD, and VA, will come together on April 20th for this American craft beer tasting event that features unlimited tastings of over 200 seasonal craft beers. Everyone from the craft beer enthusiast to the non-drinker will enjoy this event just the same, as you can experience as many or little tastings as you’d like, and can also spend your time trying out the local food trucks, playing lawn games with friends, listening to music, and more. General Admission is $45 and VIP Admission is $75 (includes access to dugouts, free tasting glasses, and DC Beer Fest hats). Tip: Bring a designated driver with you and get their ticket for a discounted price of $20! Win-win!

Virginia Gold Cup

When: May 4, 2019  10 a.m. – 7:30 p.m.

10:00 a.m. - Gates open to public

11:30 a.m. - Terrier Race Exhibition

12:00 p.m. - Opening Ceremonies Performances

1:30 p.m. - Races begin

7:30 p.m. - Gates close

If the Kentucky Derby is an event you look forward to all year but can’t manage to make it there in person, then you may want to add the Virginia Gold Cup to your calendar instead. This annual steeplechase, which takes place on the first Saturday in May (the same day as the Kentucky Derby) in the northern Virginia countryside, features multiples horse races, Jack Russell Terrier Races, tailgate competitions, and a fancy hat contest. General Admission is $85 per car, so round up 5-6 of your closest friends and share a ride and in the fun together! Races are held rain or shine so be sure to bring an umbrella just in case!

Capitol Riverfront Outdoor Movie

When: Thursdays, June 13-August 22

If you’re looking for a lower cost option for some summer fun, then enjoying a movie under the stars with family or friends is the perfect way to go. Every Thursday evening starting in June, the Capital Riverfront offers a new feature film. This year’s line up starts with Crazy Rich Asians and ends with Bohemian Rhapsody, so this is the place to go if you missed any of the recent most critically acclaimed films. Bring a blanket or lawn chairs and a picnic and you’re all set for a fun, pocket-friendly date night or family-fun night.

Washington Nationals Baseball

Come cheer on the Washington Nationals as they play one of their many home games throughout the season from the end of April through the end of September at the beautiful Nationals Park Stadium, situated along the Anacostia River near the Navy Yard.
